In October of 2009, my good friend and fellow Southern California neighbor, Andrew Wilder of Eating Rules, was struck by a simple idea: What would happen if he went for an entire month without eating any processed foods?
Fast forward to now, and you’ll find that Andrew is in his third year of hosting “October Unprocessed.
The challenge is simple: Commit to eating no processed foods during the month of October.
I know, I know… you may be thinking, the month is half over. That’s okay, it’s not too late!!! If you haven’t already, please take a moment to learn more about it, decide if you can do it, and then take the pledge. Do it for 3 days, a week, two weeks, or go the rest of the year. Whatever you decide, you’ll be much better off.
Here at the RGB, we’ve taken the pledge. But maybe it’s easier for us because we like to cook from scratch, have an edible garden, and keep a flock of chickens. (Backyard protein, FTW!)
So in the spirit of #october #unprocessed, we’ve written a few words at Eating Rules on Top Ten Reasons to Keep a Flock of Backyard Chickens, so that you too, might be convinced to start a flock.
And then once you do, use your eggs to make a batch of garlic mayonnaise (to slather on a homemade banh mi), whisk a hollandaise in less than five minutes, or dole up a souffle with Grand Marnier and creme anglaise (using more eggs). Whatever you decide, your eggs can’t be any more fresh.
Happy #october #unprocessed!
