Blooming artichokes mean were at the end of the season. Farewell until autumn, when the second batch comes up!
Once upon a time, when my good friend Jeff and I were both single, we occasionally took turns cooking for one another before settling onto the couch for an evening in front of the TV. On one such evening, grill-master Jeff pulled out a marinated artichoke side dish that ended up being the best artichoke I ever had. Later in the evening, I found the recipe online, and have been making it ever since.
Nowadays, with Mr. RGBistro on grill duty, we have these artichokes as often as our garden-ready thistles will let us.

Jeff and his wife Colleen write at The Taste Place; a “group blog serving up food and drink recipes, reviews, tips, techniques, and experiences.” Expert griller and smoker Jeff has a tri-tip recipe that he once made for my office Halloween potluck and contest; IT WON. And Colleen can be found trimming down calorie-rich recipes to make them Weight-Watchers friendly. Head over there if you’re the type of person that fancies a good bourbon, smoked meat and hearty dishes.
For the grilled artichoke recipe, head over to Jeff and Colleen’s blog at The Taste Place. If you poke around long enough, you might find a recipe or two that we guest-posted there before we created our own site.
To grill asparagus (which we also do quite often), simply put them in the same marinade and grill them with the artichokes.
Happy grilling!

These were prepared for a Fourth of July Al Fresco Dinner at a neighbor’s house across the hill.

I love grilling fresh veggies. Asparagus are my mother’s favorite, so I’m glad to see them making an appearance on the grill. I’m eager to check out the grilled artichokes too. My husband and I adore artichokes. Thank you for sharing with me. I hope you had a joy-filled weekend, and I’m wishing you a blessed week full of love, laughter and family.
Thanks for the shout out, m’lady! ‘Twas and is always a pleasure to cook for or with you!
I love artichokes. But when I see them all blossomed out in royal purple I imagine it would be hard to harvest them for eating. GREG
GREG – That’s why when they bloom, we say, “it’s the end of the season.” We actually don’t cook them once they’ve blossomed. Those are saved for “RGB Floral Arrangements.”

We’ve never grown artichokes, but I bought a flowering one at a FM to use in a table centerpiece – there’s so cool looking. The grilled chokes look fabulous – I’m headed over to Jeff’s…
Oh look at all those gorgeous veggies on the grill! I want to be your neighbor.
I’m looking at your gorgeous ‘chokes at the top and wondering if they are related to the protea flower. I bet the RGB knows the answer! (either you or wiki)
The veggie roasting is incredible! We roast veggies indoors and on the grill as much as possible and I hope we get to do it together sometime soon!
Every time I see your photos I have serious garden envy – and then I remember that I was born with a brown thumb and that feats such as growing artichokes and citrus and figs and…. are best left to the experts!!
Good thing for me is that I can buy all the produce I need to make these wonderful recipes!! Can’t wait to see the new kitchen (or better yet, help christen it!!)
Your garden never ceases to amaze me! I definitely love grilling season – there’s just something about cooking and eating outside that is casual & relaxing. Happy Summer to RGB!
