Bistro Peeps | Backyard Chickens at the RGB

In summer of 2011, we took the plunge and added  chickens to our brood! Read our micro blog below (fromthe bottom up) to see how they’re doing. :-)

Sunday, October 9:

At the end of August, we added more to the flock. Fifteen, to be exact. Today, they grew out of the brooder and were relocated out back!!

The three remaining girls from the original flock of eight are now 15 weeks old. EGGS ANY DAY NOW!!!

Friday, July 15, 2011:

This may be the last week we’re able to get good pictures of the little ladies. They do NOT like sitting in one place for more than a couple of seconds!

Chick E is now “Eddie.” Still trying to figure out names for the rest.

Friday, July 1, 2011:

One week older, the Bistro Peeps are still doing great! (Other than stuffing their water bowl with their bedding.) I have a sneaking suspicion that Chick E, the Sicilian Buttercup, is a roo. You can see in the photo below he even stands a little “taller” than the rest of them, and walks with his chest out. We’ll find out in a few weeks…

Not any closer to building the coop… but we still have a few weeks!

Friday, June 24, 2011:

June reads at the RGB.

It all started off as one big joke. I kept telling people I was going to get chickens. And right behind me, Mr. RGBistro kept saying, “no, we’re not… she’s mistaken.”

For two years, the conversation never got farther than that.

But then… a series of unfortunate events happened, and I lost my cat. Not just any cat… but my heart cat; the little buddy who stuck by my side through (most) of my 20s. In a moment of sadness, I told Mr. RGBistro it’d be nice to add to the brood… and since a grown man doesn’t know what to do with a sobbing wife, he said “okay, you can have your chickens.”

Enter… the local library. The local bookstore. Fiction; non-fiction… I was immersed in chicken literature. Before long, I had purchased a set of blueprints and we were studying coop plans over breakfast.

I knew Mr. RGBistro was really along for the ride when I came home one day to four new posts and a roll of hardware cloth: gloves on, tools out, the man was ready to build a coop.

Without further ado, please welcome………. our new baby BISTRO PEEPS!

For now, the peeps occupy in a cardboard box under a pair of 100-watt heat lamps. In a few weeks, they’ll move out back to custom real estate under the grape trellis.

Hi there.
I saw a post or two from you over on Backyard Chickens. Somehow, I clicked around and arrived over here. Love your blog/website. Very nice. Congrats on taking the plunge. I did, several years ago now, and love my “pets with benefits”. You will have lots of fun with them. :)

I happened upon your posts as I am trying to find out poultry policy in various cities w/in O.C. I am originally from Seal Beach, and have lived in Tucson now for nearly 20 years. I constantly toy w/the idea of going home, but I will not live in an area that bans the bird!

Anyway…….”Hi” and nice to “meet” you.
Cheers,
Stacy

OH MY GOODNESS!!! They are so darn cute! I’m in love with the one who has the little black rings around her eyes. Cannot wait to meet them in person!

Oh the pics of the little chicks are so adorable. Good luck with the coop building. Post pics when you have them all moved in!
